In 2006, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control [NCIPC] reported that 5.3 million women between the ages of 18 years and older experienced domestic violence in the U.S. Domestic violence is a serious issue as indicated by these figures. It can happen to anyone including: neighbors, friends, co-workers and family members.

Far too many people can recall seeing or hearing someone being abused or are victims of this kind of violence themselves. Edwards said, “Domestic violence happened in my family.” Her mother who passed away told of physical abuse by her father. Her mother recalled how her sister at a young age grew frustrated and fearful of the abuse. Fortunately, she had the courage to speak up to her mother. She said to her, “Mama! Mama! Why don’t you leave him?” Later on, her mother left him in order to save her life and her family. Miss Edwards said, “This is my family’s story and why I am here to support women, who are victims of domestic violence.”

Betty Warren, a coordinator for Interlace, explained their program. “We created the ‘Zero Tolerance Campaign,’ to raise awareness about the impact of domestic violence in our community." Supporters of the “Zero Tolerance Campaign” have the opportunity to give women, who are victims of domestic violence, a second chance to live a normal life. Warren said, “The ‘Zero Tolerance Campaign’ is a way for the whole community to get involved.” She commented further, “Funds are needed to support public education, awareness and advocacy to create lasting solutions for domestic violence in Buncombe County." Interlace has saved many families from domestic violence.

Individuals can help their community and stop the tide of violence, while shopping during the holidays. Miss Edwards is giving 50% of the proceeds from the sale of her e-book, 50 Ways to Maximize Your Potential, to support Interlace and their “Zero Tolerance Campaign” in the fight against domestic violence. Women need a safe home for themselves and their families. “Domestic violence is a community issue,” said Warren.

Anyone who experiences an act of domestic violence can call the 24-hour domestic violence hotline at (800)-799-SAFE (7233) or 1800-787-3224 (TTY). Edwards says, “I would like to save women from domestic violence by raising money to help a worthy cause.” We all can fight this issue by preventing it from happening in our very own family. So to everyone shop for change during the holidays and prevent domestic violence.
