Apart from Imus…

Apr 30, 2007 by

In a timely analysis, Media Matters for America points out that the tradition of racism and sexism making (air)waves through prominent media personalities is neither new nor should come as shocking, after Don Imus.

Indeed, personalities such as Glenn Beck, Neal Boortz, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Michael Savage, Michael Smerconish, and John Gibson have been disappointing enough in the past.

Limbaugh has expressed his discoveries such as that the women wished for sexual harassment.

    Hey Jack

Thanks for pointing out that link. That’s a pretty extensive list — almost a bit too much to handle all in one sitting.

I guess that’s the nature of “shock radio.” It’s not my interest, personally — but it must be somebody’s.

I was interested in the Imus affair, for slightly different reasons. I think it indicated a real shift in the state of technology. His recording was aired originally, and taped by a listener. Then distributed all over the world via the web. By users — not big media companies, not news outlets (until later). This was a real grassroots, New Internet event.

I found a great essay that sums it all up, on this media site — Media 3.0. The article (“Imus in a Techno-Political World”) is by Shelly Palmer, and it can be found here:

    Definitely worth a read.
