Gays need not apply. You know that it’s perfectly legal under federal law to refuse to hire people because they’re gay, or just because the employer thinks they’re gay. Still perfectly legal under federal law and in 29 of the states. No job for you ’cause of who you love. Believe that? After 40 years, the US Senate finally voted last week in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the law that would finally proclaim that my consensual sex life has no bearing on my character or my ability to perform a given job function, in other words, it would prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the same way the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bans discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, etc. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? But wait, this bill has to pass through the the House of Representatives, you know, that pious place where all those compassionate conservatives work, the ones who want do away with the minimum wage and child labor laws to protect my “freedom” to pay an 11 year old 3 bucks an hour to work in my unregulated asbestos factory, and John (Cry Baby) Boehner’s flatly against ENDA (but of course) so don’t hold your breath. Want to do something? Call your Congress person and tell him or her that it’s high time they wake up to the 21st century and vote for equality and fairness.
