Am I Entitled to Severance When I’m Terminated From My Job?

This is Jack Tuckner, New York City-based employment lawyer. The question today is, am I entitled to severance when I’m terminated from my job? And the short answer, unfortunately is no, you’re not entitled to severance.

There’s no law requiring a company to pay you severance anywhere in the United States. Although if your position is being eliminated in a reduction in force where you’re not being replaced, the company may offer one or two weeks of pay per year of service, but otherwise, no, you’re not entitled to severance.
